Norfolk Care Careers has launched a new campaign to help young people find a career in care in the county. Jo, a trainee nursing associate studying at UEA whilst working with a healthcare company, is one of five young adults fronting the campaign
Five young adults working in care are featured in a series of videos showing what they love about working in care, from building friendships with the people they support to doing a job that’s different every day. Jo, a trainee nursing associate is studying at UEA whilst working with Insignia Health Care, is one of them, looking after individuals in their homes with complex care needs. She said “I think its one of the most rewarding and impactful jobs ever. The day I started I fell in love with it. The job has taught me emotional resilience, and challenged me to change my perspective on what health care means.”
She adds: “One of the main things I’ve learnt is that I wasn’t expecting was how to work alongside the families of the service users that I support. The apprenticeship has offered me many opportunities. Recently, I travelled to Great Ormond Street Hospital to learn about more specialised healthcare conditions and I also got to use BSL which I now use more often and really enjoy.
“A lot of my friends have said that care would never be for them but I come home from work and tell them about my day and how much of an impact I feel I make and they’ve all reconsidered. My main piece of advice to someone who doesn’t know if they’d like care or not would be to try it because you really do make a difference and you make such an impact on someone’s life and it’s really rewarding.”
Jo’s case study, along with four others, are available on the Norfolk County Council Youtube channel. Cllr Alison Thomas, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care said “I’m delighted to see the impact these young people are having in the care sector in Norfolk. As a former nurse I know that working in care is a brilliant, challenging and rewarding experience, which offers so many different opportunities for people to learn new skills and find a career for life. I hope lots of people are inspired to see the potential of a career in care.”
Norfolk Care Careers showcases the breadth of roles available in adult social care in Norfolk, offering a platform for care providers to post vacancies for people to explore the opportunities. There are currently fifty vacancies listed, ranging from part time care to permanent roles in fundraising, management and mental health.
The project is funded by Norfolk County Council which aims to encourage more people to consider care as a career, supporting the care market to employ a diverse workforce to support Norfolk’s residents to live more independently, for longer, in the place that they call home.
