Julia Allum is the illustrator behind the vibrant new mural celebrating Wymondham’s heritage which was unveiled in town centre last week. Here, Julia explains how the artwork incorporates more than 20 local features
Who are you and what do you do?
I’m an illustrator who creates bright colourful images for publishing, packaging and advertising, as well as selling prints from my website. Inspired by my love of vintage and art deco design, I build up images by layering simple shapes, playing with colour and pattern to craft eye-catching compositions.
What led you to becoming an illustrator?
I’ve been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember so I don’t think pursuing anything other than art ever crossed my mind. I chose to study illustration as I like to have certain set boundaries to work within. Illustration is about problem solving, and it’s the challenge of answering a brief to communicate a subject, message or idea in an appealing visual way that I enjoy.
Are you Norfolk born and raised? What do you love about the county?
I’m not originally from Norfolk, I grew up in The Netherlands, went to art college in Cornwall and then settled here 30 years ago. I definitely call it home now. I love the outdoors so it’s wonderful to have the Broads, countryside and coast on my doorstep with so many unspoilt places to explore. I’m not from Wymondham so prior to painting the mural I didn’t know much about the town. Having now spent a fair bit of time there it certainly has a lot to offer (see mural!) and I found everyone to be extremely friendly.
How many town references does the mural include and how enjoyable has the creative process been?
The mural includes 23 references to the town, some are more obvious than others, but hopefully that means people can spot something new each time they walk past. It took some time to figure out how to fit everything in, so all the elements flowed together. That’s the challenge I enjoy though, so I was determined to squeeze in as much as I could. I loved the whole process. Drawing the design on the wall was the trickiest part due to all the straight lines. Spending time on that paid off though, as the painting was then fairly straightforward and I actually found it to be quite therapeutic.
What has the feedback been to the mural so far?
I’m pleased to say feedback so far has been overwhelmingly positive. I received so many lovely comments from the public whist I was painting, that I really must thank everyone for all their support. It made the long hours so much easier and enjoyable knowing the local community were behind me.

Yes, signed prints are now available from the local bookshop in Wymondham, Kett’s Books.

The mural can be found at Wymondham’s historic fire arch, the former entrance and exit to the town’s fire station. It forms part of a programme of public realm improvements, jointly funded by South Norfolk Council and Wymondham Town Council, to enhance the town centre and encourage more visitors to explore local businesses and attractions.
