Neil’s Vineyard Ultra Marathon for Norwich Samaritans

March 11, 2025 Leave a Comment

Samaritans’ listening volunteer Neil Rose is in the middle of a 1800km vineyard trek across the UK to support the Norwich branch of the charity. Ahead of a ‘Talking Walk’ at Flint Vineyard near Bungay, he explains why

A Norfolk man is undertaking an extraordinary endurance challenge walking 1,800km across the UK while visiting 100 vineyards to raise vital funds for Norwich Samaritans. Neil Rose, 61, a dedicated listening volunteer for the charity, has set out on a year-long Vineyard Ultra Marathon, covering 18km at each vineyard or between locations. His goal is to raise £2,000 for the Norwich branch, supporting its crucial work in providing emotional support to those in crisis.

By March, Neil will reach the halfway point of his challenge, having visited 50 vineyards and walked an impressive 900km. With over 1,000 UK vineyards to choose from, each with its own rugged terrain, Neil’s journey is a symbolic reflection of the uphill battles many people face in life.

“I’ve always been inspired by those who dedicate their time to helping others. Samaritans’ volunteers are there 24/7 offering selfless support to those in need,” said Neil. “I wanted a challenge that truly represented the struggles people experience, so I chose 18k roughly the height of Mount Everest when walked up and down.”

A passionate advocate for the benefits of nature and community, Neil hopes his challenge will not only raise funds but also encourage conversation around mental health. As part of his mission, he is inviting others to join him for a “Talking Walk” at select vineyards an opportunity to combine physical activity with open discussions on well-being.
