How to treat acne at whatever age

May 12, 2025 Leave a Comment

For this month’s column, skin health expert Louise Thomas-Minns, Founder and CEO of Louise Thomas Skin Care gets under the skin of teen versus adult acne

Acne is one of the most common skin concerns, but not all breakouts are the same. Whether you’re a teenager dealing with hormonal surges or an adult battling unexpected flare-ups, understanding the key differences between teen acne vs. adult acne is essential for effective treatment. In this guide, we’ll explore the causes, symptoms, and best skincare solutions tailored for both age groups.

This is a skin disorder close to my heart as I suffered with chronic acne from the age of 17 all the way into my 30’s. Our signature facial treatment approach and subsequent ‘signature collection’ of skin care, comes from this understanding and empathy towards anyone who is struggling with a skin health concern. One of our values is to also educate the consumer in their skin concerns.

What Causes Teen Acne?

Teenage acne is predominantly driven by hormonal changes during puberty. As the body undergoes rapid development, there is an increase in androgen hormones, which stimulate the sebaceous (oil) glands to produce more sebum. Excess oil, combined with dead skin cells and bacteria, leads to clogged pores and breakouts.

Common Characteristics of Teen Acne:

Location: Primarily affects the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin)

Types of Breakouts: Blackheads, whiteheads, papules, and pustules

Triggers: Hormonal fluctuations, diet, stress, and improper skincare

Best Treatments for Teen Acne:

  • Gentle Cleansing: Use a mild, non-stripping cleanser to remove excess oil without drying the skin. Louise Thomas Skin Care The Cleanser, is a great option as it will do just this.
  • Salicylic Acid and Benzoyl Peroxide: These ingredients help unclog pores and reduce acne-causing bacteria. They can, however, be quite harsh options. Step in our Hero serum #3 Balance & Clear Serum which can be applied to affected areas to gently unclog and also defend this skin with its prebiotic ingredient.
  • Lightweight Moisturiser: Even oily skin needs hydration – opt for oil-free, non-comedogenic formulas.
  • Sun Protection: Many acne treatments increase sun sensitivity, so applying SPF daily is essential.

What Causes Adult Acne?

Unlike teenage acne, adult acne is more complex and influenced by a combination of factors beyond just hormones. Stress, diet, lifestyle, and skincare habits play a significant role in breakouts occurring later in life.

Common Characteristics of Adult Acne:

Location: Predominantly appears on the jawline, cheeks, and neck

Types of Breakouts: Deep, inflamed cystic acne, along with occasional whiteheads

Triggers: Stress, hormonal imbalances (such as pregnancy or PCOS), diet (dairy and high-glycemic foods), and harsh skincare products

Best Treatments for Adult Acne:

  • Hydrating and Balancing Skincare: Unlike teen acne, adult acne-prone skin often lacks moisture. Use gentle cleansers and hydrating serums to support the skin barrier such as The Cleanser and our Hero Serums #2 and #3
  • Niacinamide and Retinoids: These ingredients help regulate oil production, calm inflammation, and promote cell turnover for smoother skin. You can find an effective yet gentle retinoid in Hero Serum #1 Healthy Ageing.
  • Hormonal Balance: If acne is linked to hormones, consult a professional about potential lifestyle changes or treatments.
  • Stress Management: Chronic stress leads to increased cortisol levels, which can exacerbate breakouts. Incorporate relaxation techniques like yoga or meditation.

Final Thoughts: Treating Acne at Any Age
