Why your skin needs a reset this autumn

September 15, 2026 Leave a Comment

This month, skin health therapist Louise Thomas-Minns, Founder and CEO of Louise Thomas Skin Care, looks at the summer skin hangover: and explains why your skin needs a reset this autumn

There’s something about September that makes us want to start afresh. It always fees like the true start of my new year. The diary fills up again as routines return, and suddenly we’re thinking about getting our skin back on track after a summer of late nights, sunshine, swimming, travel and perhaps slightly less-than-perfect skincare habits. But here’s the thing: your skin probably doesn’t need a complete overhaul. It needs some understanding. After years of working with skin in clinic, I see the same pattern every September. Skin that looked beautifully bronzed in August can suddenly feel dry, tight, congested, sensitive or simply… a little lacklustre. And often, it isn’t because your skin has suddenly “gone bad”. It’s because your skin barrier has been working overtime.

Your skin has had a busy summer

Sun exposure, even when you’ve been diligent with SPF, can contribute to increased dryness and sensitivity. Add swimming pools, sea water, heat, air conditioning, travel, disrupted sleep and changes in diet, and your skin has had plenty to contend with.

Then autumn arrives.

The temperature starts to drop; indoor heating starts creeping back in and humidity changes. Your skin is suddenly having to adapt again.

This is why I’m a big believer in supporting the skin rather than attacking it.

September is not the time to panic-buy five new acids, introduce an aggressive retinol and start exfoliating every night because your skin feels congested.

In fact, doing too much can be exactly what your skin doesn’t need.

Start with the barrier

Healthy skin is resilient skin.

The skin barrier helps to keep moisture in and unwanted irritants out. When that barrier is compromised, you may notice tightness, flaking, redness, sensitivity or products that previously felt comfortable suddenly start to sting.

My first piece of advice is therefore beautifully simple:

Go back to basics

Cleanse without stripping.
Hydrate properly.
Support the barrier.
Protect your skin every day.
And give it a little time.

This is one of the principles behind the Louise Thomas Skin Care approach: skin heals before it performs.

Rather than chasing the latest trend or trying to force your skin into behaving differently overnight, we look at what your skin actually needs.

And don’t forget what’s happening underneath

One of the biggest mistakes we make is thinking skincare is the whole story.

It isn’t.

Your skin is living tissue, and what happens internally matters. Nutrition, sleep, stress, hormones, movement and your overall health can all influence how your skin behaves.

As we move towards autumn, it’s a brilliant time to look at the basics again.

Are you eating enough protein?
Are you getting enough colourful plants and healthy fats?
Are you drinking enough?
Are you sleeping well?
Are you moving your body and strength training?
Are you giving yourself enough recovery time?

None of these things is a magic “skin fix”.

But collectively, they create the conditions in which healthy skin can thrive.

Your autumn skin reset doesn’t need to be complicated

If your skin is feeling a little out of sorts right now, I’d resist the temptation to throw everything at it.

Instead, for the next few weeks:

1. Simplify your routine.
Strip things back if your skin is irritated or reactive.

2. Prioritise hydration and barrier support.
Especially as the weather begins to change.

3. Keep wearing your SPF.
September is not the end of sun protection.

4. Introduce actives thoughtfully.
More isn’t automatically better.

5. Look beyond your bathroom shelf.
Consider your food, sleep, stress and hormones too.

6. Pay attention to what your skin is telling you.
Tightness, stinging, redness and persistent sensitivity aren’t things to simply push through.

And perhaps most importantly, stop assuming that every change in your skin requires a new product.

Sometimes the smartest thing you can do is give your skin less to deal with.

The autumn opportunity

I actually love this point in the year for skin.

Summer is about protection. Autumn is about repair, restoration and getting your skin ready for the colder months ahead.

It’s a chance to reassess rather than reset everything.

At Louise Thomas Skin Care, that’s exactly how we approach skincare. Founded from more than 30 years of experience working with skin, the range has been created around a simple philosophy: science, nutrition and a holistic understanding of skin health belong together.

There isn’t a 12-step routine because your skin isn’t a 12-step problem.

Start with the fundamentals. Understand what your skin is asking for. Then choose products that support it.

If your skin is feeling a little more sensitive, dry, congested or simply not quite itself after summer, you can explore the Louise Thomas Skin Care range — and our approach to skin health — at louisethomasskincare.co.uk

Because perhaps your autumn skin doesn’t need a makeover.

Perhaps it just needs a little more care.
