A corner of a ward at the James Paget has been transformed into a tuck shop to help patients stay both mentally and physically active. Division of Medicine Lead Nurse Khristina Bartlett explains why
A tuck shop with a difference has opened up in the corner of a ward at James Paget Hospital – with the aim of helping patients with cognitive impairments say both mentally and physically active. Staff on Ward 12, which provides cares for older patients, came up with the idea of turning part of the ward into a mock-up of a store offering sweet treats such as fruit drinks, custard pots and snacks. The shop is designed to help patients with cognitive impairments receive some mental stimulus – as well as encourage them to stay active by taking a stroll across the ward, accompanied by staff.
Once at the shop, patients can select their goods and place them in a basket or bag – but, unlike at a real store, all the items are free. The creation of the store has been a collaborative effort, with the structure purchased by Morgan Sindall Construction / Sothams Engineering Services Ltd – and the shelves stocked with goodies, thanks to the hospital’s catering team and fund-raising events held by staff on the ward.
It was formally opened last week, with patient Malcolm ‘Eddie’ Edmonds cutting the ribbon in front of a gathering of staff, including representatives from our Estates and Catering teams.
Division of Medicine Lead Nurse Khristina Bartlett said: “Our team on Ward 12 are always looking at ways to improve their environment, for the benefit of their patients. The shop is a great example not only of the team’s innovation but also collaborative working between teams across the hospital.”
