Rachel Collier-Wilson is a Trustee of the Norfolk Contemporary Art Society, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. Here, the Artist and Curator looks forward to Held Together, a special group exhibition starting tomorrow
Who are you and what do you do?
I am Rachel Collier-Wilson, artist and curator. Also, I’m one of the Trustees for Norfolk Contemporary Art Society.
What is the background to Norfolk Contemporary Art Society – and what is your involvement?
Founded in 1956, Norfolk Contemporary Art Society (ncas) is a registered charity dedicated to advancing public education and engagement in the appreciation of visual arts, particularly the creative arts of the present day. For 70 years, NCAS has supported and promoted contemporary art and artists in Norfolk through a programme of exhibitions, talks and events, creating opportunities for artists and audiences to engage with contemporary practice and ideas. I was elected as a Trustee in 2025 following my work with Queerfest CIC, Norwich, as the society sought to expand its diversity and foster a more inclusive community.
How has the society evolved over the past 70 years?
I think there has become a greater emphasis on community collaboration in how ncas develops. Fostering critical dialogue around the changing face of contemporary art and its relationship to the wider social landscape.
How will you be marking the 70th anniversary next month?
The Held Together members exhibition at Anteros Arts Foundation is very exciting, showcasing a diverse and vibrant collection of members’ works. As Chair Liz Maw says: “It’s a wonderful way for the charity to celebrate 70 years — by bringing our members together and showcasing the creativity and range of artists working today.”
How would you describe the forthcoming Held Together exhibition?
All the submissions were judged anonymously, allowing the panel to focus purely on the work itself. Their thoughtful approach has helped us create a diverse and engaging exhibition that reflects the breadth of talent within ncas.
What does it mean to have your own work selected for the exhibition?
It feels like a privilege to have had my work selected!
Who has been involved in the selection process?
We’re very grateful to JMC Anderson, Carl Rowe and Kenza Gray for undertaking the selection and bringing their experience and independent perspective to the process.
Where is it happening and how can people find out more?
Held Together will be open to the public at Anteros Arts Foundation Fye Bridge Street, Norwich, from 29 September to 11 October 2026 (Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm; Sundays 10am to 4pm).
What are your hopes and dreams for the future of ncas?
I would love to see ncas developing its diversity and inclusivity practices, whilst also addressing environmental issues we are all facing. I feel like art can nurture self-worth and collective belonging, something I hope ncas can embrace more of in the future.
