Debbie Davison and Kate Gedge are the mother and daughter duo behind The Nest Café in Burnham Deepdale, which opens on Thursday. Here, they describe the journey from starting out in a converted horsebox to renovating a café space
What led you both to establishing The Nest in the first place and how long has it been going?
Having both worked in completely different sectors pre-setting up in business together – Kate working in the Corporate Law industry in London and Debbie a variety of jobs, from her own garden maintenance business to being a funeral director – food has always been the passion that has brought us together. We have long dreamt of being able to own a cafe to share our love of food with the wider community. Initially the outlay of doing so was too great and so we looked for a way of having something café-like, but on a smaller scale – this was how our horsebox café, The Nest, was born. We bought the horsebox in 2021 and were lucky enough to secure regular pitches alongside a variety of amazing events for the last four years, one such being our pitch outside Deepdale Camping & Rooms which we’ve served for the last three years.
What do you love about Burnham Deepdale and Deepdale Market in particular?
An obvious reason to love the area is of course how beautiful it is! The walks along the coast path and the stunning marsh landscape makes it the best place to work. But deeper than that, we have grown to love the people who live there. We have been blessed to get to know the locals, and the team who work across Deepdale in the campsite and shops, and we really value the sense of community that has brought us.
Do you recommend working with your Mum?!
Haha, great question! That may send fear through most people, but we are lucky that we get on so well it’s more like working with your best friend. It also helps that although similar in a lot of ways, we also balance each other out in other ways which enables us to run different parts of the business more effectively. When taking a leadership personality test recently let’s just say that Mum came out as the earthy sunshine to my cool fire!

How has taking on the café space at Dalegate Market come about?
As mentioned above, we have had our pitch at Deepdale Camping & Rooms for the last three years and have also collaborated on events with the site which has meant we’ve built such a connection with the team there and gained a good local following. When we heard the café was available for new tenants it seemed like a no-brainer to take our business to the next step and fulfil the dream we’ve always had.

When are you hoping to open and what can people look forward to when you do?
All being well we are opening on 12th February. Initially we will be open 6 days a week 8am-4pm, with our close day on a Tuesday. They can look forward to a full breakfast menu, light lunches including sandwiches and jacket potatoes, and home baked cakes and slices served alongside our universally loved coffee.
