Hingham in line for better mental health

Hingham has become the latest community in South Norfolk to achieve Mindful Town status – and many of the town’s newly trained Wellbeing Champions are members of the Flying High Line Dancers. Line Dancing Leader Lisa Stevens explains more

Hingham is flying high after becoming the latest community in South Norfolk to achieve Mindful Town status, as part of South Norfolk Council’s initiative to strengthen mental health and wellbeing across the district. Many of the town’s newly trained Wellbeing Champions are members of the Flying High Line Dancers and other local businesses and groups who have also played an important part in supporting the town’s journey include Lincoln’s of Hingham and Hingham Community Cupboard.

Achieving Mindful Town status highlights the commitment of Hingham’s Wellbeing Champions, who are now equipped to offer a listening ear and practical support to friends, neighbours, colleagues, and the wider community, backed by South Norfolk Council’s Help Hub.

Lisa Stevens, leader of the Flying High Line Dancers, said: “When the opportunity came up to train as a Wellbeing Champion for Hingham, I jumped at the chance. Life is full of challenges, and it’s important to be there when people need a sympathetic ear.”

South Norfolk Council’s Cabinet Member for Supporting People, Cllr Graham Minshull, said: “This initiative encourages everyday conversations that help reduce loneliness, improve wellbeing and build a culture where people look out for one another, whether that’s over a coffee at Lincoln’s, during a dance class, or while picking up essentials from the community cupboard.”

The momentum continues to build across South Norfolk. Members of Marlingford and Colton Parish Council have recently completed their training and achieved Mindful Village status.

South Norfolk Council is committed to further strengthening wellbeing support across the district and is encouraging residents and groups in neighbouring areas to get involved.

    Dear Lisa

    Good post.

I like the sign the woman called Deb Hardy is holding. I was taking about mindfulness only yesterday to a conversationalist.

I have a friend that likes taking photos of Village and Town signs in Norfolk. I once encouraged her to take photograph of the Beccles sign that my cousin made visible as you enter Beccles through Worlingham. Prompted by the sign behind you. 🙂

Mental Health is so important and Line Dancing sounds like a great way to promote mental health.

I am a Director of Living with Mental Health CIC and would be interested in achieving a similar effect in Lowestoft. Imagine a peer support group line dancing of an evening. I think that peer support in the community is the domain of the Lived Experience group that appreciated but does not always wants Clinical as a solution. I am interested in a blend of peer support and holistic in our groups. By the way we only incorporated in July 2025, and we are moving into action phase.

We are looking for collaboration and interest in Well Being space.

Please get in contact via Emma O. To open up the discussion. Or directly via my email address on the CIC site.

Thank you for the post I hope we can draw a line between Hingham and Lowestoft.

    KR

    David
