Esme Dickinson is the Founder of Social Sisters, a new community hub in Norwich for women in their 20s. Here, the primary school teacher explains how the hub is a way of building friendships in a safe way
First things first, who are you and what do you do?
My name is Esme Dickinson and I’m the founder of Social Sisters in Norwich, which is a community hub for girls in their 20s. It’s a way of meeting new friends in a safe environment. I arrange lots of different activities from pub quizzes to hikes, yoga sessions and meet ups in bars. It’s just about us trying out different activities and generally enjoying ourselves.
What has led you to launching Social Sisters Norwich?
I’ve returned to the city after university and working in London, and I’m keen to meet new people and discover new places and activities. The city has changed a lot – there are so many new things to try and so many new bars and cafes, especially around The Lanes. And activities like padel, paddle boarding and Pilates are everywhere.
Are you Norwich born and raised? What do you love about the city?
I was born just outside Norwich, in a small village called Hapton, but we moved into the city when I started primary school. It was a great place to grow up, with lots of sporting opportunities and I love playing tennis. Norwich is small enough to get around easily, always feels safe and you are near all the beaches and The Broads. And the shops are improving all the time. My family is here too and our border collie, Bella.
Do you think there’s a real gap in the market when it comes to organising safe-space events for women in their 20s?
Maybe a little bit – it can be difficult to meet new people face-to-face. There are some great running clubs and sporting groups, but not so many just for going out. I have some very good friends in the city, and I asked them if they thought Social Sisters was a good idea and we went from there.

Has the response to the first events surprised you?
It has been really pleasing, but also a learning curve. I don’t really have any experience in event planning or marketing – I’m a primary school teacher. But I really enjoy doing it and thinking of things that people might like to do. We hope to run two or three events a month – or whatever people would like – we let them decide what they fancy doing. We’re always open to ideas.
How can young women join the community you’re building?
Have a look at our Instagram @socialsisters_norwich. That’s the best place to start and then we have a WhatsApp group for each event.
When and where is the next event?
We are meeting at The Drawing Rooms in the city centre, on Pottergate, from 8pm on Saturday, October 18. Just for drinks and a chat. I’m really looking forward to it. It will be relaxed – no pressure – and I’ve got a new dress!
What are your hopes and dreams for Social Sisters?
I’d just like people to enjoy themselves, really; get a bit more confident, visit new places, try new things and make some new friends. I think we are building a community, and it can only grow. I’d like to develop a merchandise range like water bottles and hoodies and organise a weekly event – and maybe move into other towns and cities – who knows! It’s a case of wait and see. I suppose I’d look for some sponsors along the way or people who might want to work with us.
The next Socials Sisters meeting takes place at The Drawing Rooms, Pottergate, Norwich, from 8pm on Saturday, October 18, 2025. Follow Social Sisters on Instagram for the WhatsApp Group Invite.
