Design for life

January 11, 2024 Leave a Comment

Jojo Humes is a Suffolk-based Interior Designer, who has completed many projects both residential and commercial in Suffolk, Norfolk and Essex. Here, she explains why she is an advocate of ‘shopping your home’ first

Where does your love of interior design come from?

From a young age I was always interested in my surroundings and how the effect they had on me. I painted and decorated my bedroom at the tender age of 12, taking trips to Habitat on the Kings Road to pick out my favourite bits and saved all my pocket money until it was done (and learned then that it was never ‘done’). I moved on from there to buying my first home at 18 and starting to make my own curtains and blinds.

Are you Suffolk born and raised – and does Suffolk have any bearing on your style as an interior designer?

I was born and bred in Woodbridge and am currently living in Framlingham. I am on my 12th home and love to move. Suffolk has a wealth of period properties of all different styles and my love of colour and texture transfers well to these.

On that note, how would you describe your style?

I love to use colour, dark moody hues and light touch softer shades too. I also love to mix up my schemes with items old and new, and can be found on a Monday scouring antiques shops and auctions.

Where have your commissions taken you?

I have been lucky enough to work on many commissions by the coast. I love the water more than anything. I have also designed the interiors of a shepherds hut, horse box, clock tower, and a client’s brand new Ferrari.

The Ufford Crown

Where can members of the public see examples of your work, such as your commercial projects?

The Ufford Crown is one of my favourite past projects, albeit a few years ago – it still looks as good now as it did then. My clients had the faith in my design knowledge and let me run with my concept. I find the best outcomes are when people are brave.

Are you noticing more clients are interested in using sustainable materials?

I have always been an advocate of “shopping your own home” first. I use a great local upholsterer and am always looking for beautiful pieces to reupholster, particularly pairs of chairs, they always look a treat.

Jojo is ably assisted by her Welsh terrier, Hector

Would you like to give your dog a mention?!

I work alone nowadays, but am eagerly assisted by Hector my Welsh Terrier. He loves the sea just as much as me, and is a great side kick. I find that the majority of my clients have dogs, which is great for me. I am a real dog lover.

What are your hopes and dreams for the future?

I have been fortunate enough to been recommended to all my clients and people who visit their homes who admire my work, I have never advertised and find this organic approach has led me to my kind of people. I have an easy approachable nature and aim to make it fun  and take out the stress, ending up with a project that they love living in that both works for them and their loved ones.
