Helping older people stay warm and well

Hannah Bloom Suffolk Community Foundation

Suffolk Community Foundation is urging older people on low incomes to get in touch and see if they could benefit from a grant to help them stay warm this winter. Directory of Philanthropy and Engagement Hannah Bloom explains more

Thanks to the generosity of local people, Suffolk Community Foundation has now raised more than £100,000 through this year’s Surviving Winter appeal. They are now appealing for anyone who may be eligible to consider applying for funding so that the money can reach those most in need. It is a registered charity which was set up in 2005 and is part of a national family of 47 community foundations across the UK.

Hannah Bloom, Director of Philanthropy and Engagement at the largest independent grant maker to the voluntary sector in Suffolk. says: ‘We are delighted to have met our goal of raising £100,000 this year and would like to thank the people of Suffolk for supporting our appeal so generously. The money will make a huge difference older people across the county by helping them to stay safe and warm during the cold winter months.

‘We have awarded just over 40 grants so far but are keen to hear from anyone else who could benefit, especially as the weather has now turned colder. If you are aged 66 or above, live in Suffolk and are not receiving pension credit but have a low income, please get in touch with one of our charity partners to see if we can help.’

Anyone aged 66 and above who lives in Suffolk and is not receiving pension credit can apply for a grant. To do so, click here or contact one of the charity partners who are managing applications and payments. They are:

  • Ipswich and East Suffolk – East Suffolk Citizens Advice – 0808 278 7866
  • Babergh and Mid Suffolk – Sudbury and District Citizens Advice – 01787 321400
  • West Suffolk – Gatehouse Caring – 01284 703835

Suffolk Community Foundation is also still keen to hear from anyone who feels they may be able to support the appeal. To make a donation, you can click here, call 01473 602602 or visit any branch of Suffolk Building Society to make a payment over the counter. A gift of £175 could help someone pay for gas or electricity, while £350 could provide 500 litres of heating oil.
