In this month’s column, skin health expert Louise Thomas-Minns imparts her wisdom when it comes to looking after your skin in the summer months
A couple of weeks ago we held our ‘LTSC community skin health hub’ for a group of our loyal clients and followers (let us know if you’d like to know about the next one). We discussed over tea and cake a number of topics associated with skin health, but the lead was that of ‘Summer skin care’. Specifically, what should you change (if anything) about your skin care routine as we move into this season.
I thought I would share with you our advice:
SPF! I hope we don’t have to elaborate on this but a gentle reminder that of course this is the most important step in your routine at this time of year for sure! Make sure you select a product that gives you a broad spectrum of protection for UVA as well as UVB. It also needs to be applied liberally and regularly. Many of us don’t use enough.
Whilst you can still use Retinoid based products during the Summer, we need to be mindful that the nature of this active ingredient is to renew the skin so assist with bringing fresh and vulnerable cells to the surface. They will be more sun sensitive, so my preference is to calm down the use of these types of products during the height of the Summer.
To exfoliate or not to exfoliate? Whilst we may feel the need to give our skin a good ole scrub as we experience feel the toll of the heat ‘blocking our pores’, we need to be careful not to lift away too much of our skin’s natural protective barrier. Go easy on this step of your routine and my advice would be to save intensive peeling type treatments for the Autumn/Winter.
Speak to a Pro! Ultimately get some bespoke advice about what YOUR skin needs as we change seasons. It shouldn’t be a one size fits all approach.
