In the light of yesterday’s events, clinical hypnotherapist Sam Grainger’s first column for Folk Features is all about gratitude
Yesterday’s events made me think about being grateful. The Queen spent her whole life dedicating herself to the service of her role. We should be grateful to her for this sacrifice. Gratitude is a feeling of appreciation. It allows you to reflect on what is good about your life. Often when we are busy, we forget to be grateful. It’s easy to take people or our situation for granted. Step back a while and appreciate what you have in your life and what you have achieved.
Gratitude or being grateful has a positive effect on our mental health. It allows you to express positive emotion. This then leads to improved mental health and a positive relationship with yourself and others.
When you practice gratitude regularly you are more likely to take time to reflect and notice. This makes you more self-aware and this often allows you to express more compassion and kindness. Your emotions are more positive.
I have started to note down in my journal three things I am grateful for each day. I have noticed when I am feeling sorry for myself, being self-indulgent with my feelings. This snaps me out if it and allows me to see the positive. Why not try this yourself and see how it feels. It does not need to be a big thing.
Today I’m grateful for:
- The rain to water my garden
- The cup of tea made for me this morning
- My cats being pleased to see me after my trip away.
What would you be grateful for today for yourself? Gratitude to others is also important. A random act of kindness can give somebody a boost.
Things you can do:
- Send flowers
- Help someone who is struggling
- Call someone you have not spoken to for a while
“A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees” – Amelia Earhart
