The Truth About Popular Skin Treatments

May 7, 2026 Leave a Comment

This month, Skin Health Therapist Louise Thomas-Minns, Founder & CEO of Louise Thomas Skin Care, looks at popular skin treatments and explains what works

As the founder of Louise Thomas Skincare, I’ve spent over 30 years working with clients and skin professionals to understand what truly delivers results. With so many treatments and trends circulating, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. In this article, I’m breaking down some of the most popular treatments — from micro needling to red light therapy — and explaining what really works for ageing, sensitive, or compromised skin.

1. Red Light Therapy for Skin (UK Perspective)

Red light therapy has become a buzzword in skincare, but it’s more than a trend and I’ve been working with it since its conception in the aesthetic world. Clinically, it stimulates collagen production, improves circulation, and reduces inflammation.

Effective for: fine lines, dullness, and mild skin damage

Less effective for: deep wrinkles or severe laxity

When combined with professional, barrier-supporting products like our Healthy Ageing Serum, the results are amplified because your skin is primed to absorb and utilise active ingredients.

2. Microneedling vs Chemical Peels

Both are popular resurfacing treatments, but they work in very different ways.

Microneedling:

  • Tiny needles create micro-channels in the skin, encouraging collagen and elastin production
  • Great for: scars, uneven texture, early signs of ageing
  • Requires post-treatment care with gentle, nourishing products — this is where a product like Soothe & Calm Serum is invaluable but still should not be used in the first 48 hours post treatment.

Chemical Peels:

  • Exfoliate the top layer of skin, improving texture, pigmentation, and dullness
  • Great for: pigmentation, mild acne, and superficial signs of ageing
  • Must be paired with hydration and barrier support like our Hydrator, to prevent dryness or sensitivity

Key insight: Both treatments can be effective, but results depend on proper aftercare, skin preparation and a professional who is qualified to know what they are doing! I am not a fan or advocate of at home/DIY versions.

3. Botox vs LED Therapy

Botox:

  • Targets dynamic wrinkles caused by repeated muscle movement
  • Highly effective for forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet
  • Quick results, but temporary (3-6 months)

LED Therapy:

  • Uses specific wavelengths (red or near-infrared) to stimulate collagen and reduce inflammation
  • Best for: mild ageing, improving skin health, and calming redness
  • Works slowly over repeated sessions, but strengthens the skin long-term

Expert tip: Combining therapies often gives the best outcome. Botox addresses lines, while LED and professional skincare maintain skin quality, hydration and barrier function. Whilst I am not anti-Botox, it needs to be understood that this is the cherry on the cake. There’s no point spending money on Botox and fillers if you are not going to look after the health of your skin and body. It’s like exercising regularly but eating rubbish all the time.

The Common Thread: Preparation and Aftercare

Regardless of treatment, the skin’s condition before and after is critical. At Louise Thomas Skincare, we emphasise a clinic-led, 3-pillar approach:

  1. Science: Professional-grade treatments and products to support barrier health and collagen production and advanced knowledge in the skin’s anatomy and physiology
  2. Nutrition: Guidance on internal support for skin resilience
  3. Holistic care: Lifestyle, stress, and environmental factors that influence results

Using the right serums and moisturisers from our range – The Cleanser, The Hydrator, Healthy Ageing, Balance & Clear, or Soothe & Calm – ensures your skin is protected, nourished and maximising the effects of any treatment.

Final Thoughts

Popular treatments like microneedling, chemical peels, Botox, and LED therapy can deliver fantastic results – but only when tailored to your skin type, supported by professional-grade products, and integrated into a holistic plan.

If you’re considering a skin treatment, always consult a professional who understands both the science and the lifestyle factors that impact your results. At Louise Thomas Skincare, our approach is about combining clinical expertise, nutrition and holistic care to ensure your skin not only looks great but stays healthy and resilient long-term.
