Showing the planet some love

February 1, 2022 Leave a Comment

February is the time where we think about love and, more precisely, the loved ones we want to show some extra affection to on Valentine’s Day. But we can also show the planet some love, with some random acts of planet kindness, not just in February but all year round! Here, Vicki Harris, of key partner From Suffolk With Love, offers some ideas to get you started:

A Litter Pick

Giving up an hour or two of your time to clean up your local area shows that you care about where you live and that it is clean and tidy for you and your community. It’s also brilliant for the planet! You can even get together a group of ‘Wombles’ to meet regularly and get people involved.

Feed the Birds

Put some bird seed and feeders out in your garden, especially over the winter months. The birds are brilliant at getting rid of pests in your garden naturally, so you don’t have to use pesticides, which makes this an excellent act of planet kindness.

Make Compost

You can make your own compost heap in your garden, or you can arrange a community compost heap in your road and share the compost around. As well as being good for the planet, with less waste to landfill, it’s another good way of getting to know your neighbours and creating community.

Plant Wildflowers

You can plant wildflower seeds in an area of your garden, or in pots, or in the grass verges near your house. This will attract more biodiversity in the area, which is good for your garden, good for the bees, and good for the planet. Also, they look lovely!

Grow some veg and share

If you have room in your garden, grow some of your own vegetables. Start easy with something like potatoes or carrots and then you can build it up. If you have a surplus, swap, and share with neighbours. If you don’t have a garden, you can grow herbs on your windowsill. Growing food and gardening in general is great for your mental health!

Walk or ride your bike more

Need to pop to the shop down the road? If you have time, take your bike, or walk instead of jumping in the car. It gives you that extra bit of fresh air and exercise and it’s great for reducing your carbon footprint, just that little bit is brilliant!

Shop Small, Shop Local

A great way to reduce your carbon footprint again, and support people in your local area. And if you are looking for something to send to a loved one for Valentine’s Day then look at websites like Click It Local, instead of Amazon, or look for craft markets near you.

The WITH LOVE Box – From Suffolk With Love

If you are local to Suffolk, From Suffolk With Love may have the perfect gift for your loved one. The With Love Box and The Date Night Box are new for February, they are plastic free and all items in them are handmade in Suffolk, so still a planet friendly option!
