Seeing angels

September 15, 2021 Leave a Comment

Contemporary artist Rachel List gained prominence during the first lockdown with her NHS Angel painting. And now she has painted an angel wing, this time for – where else – the Angel Hotel in Bury St Edmunds

When she got the commission to create a mural outside the entrance to the Angel Hotel in Bury St Edmunds, renowned artist Rachel List wanted to create something subtle enough for people to almost walk by. Rachel, who rose to prominence during the first lockdown with her painting ‘NHS Angel’, also has several of her artworks currently on display at the ‘Moments’ exhibition of modern art in Moyse’s Hall Museum until September 30. In fact, one of the pieces was created especially for the exhibition, and will be kept on permanent display at Moyse’s Hall.

The artist, from Yorkshire, had created a series of artworks during the first lockdown, including ‘We Love the NHS. She says of her latest commission: ‘Being called the ‘Angel’ Hotel for me instantly brings forward images of white feathers; the hotel itself is also incredibly stylish image wise.

‘So, when they asked for a mural with a single angel wing, it was my aim to create something subtle that you could almost walk by.

‘The key word being ‘almost’, something relaxing and welcoming for guests. I used acrylics and masonry paint to create the mural but was under the mercy of the great British weather, which at the time was torrential rain.

‘However, that can be part of the fun of a mural and the way I work, to create something in the moment.’

Delighted with the new artwork, which is free for both hotel guests and the public to view, Fiona Bovill, Group Sales and Marketing Manager, Gough Hotels adds: ‘We invited Rachel List to create an artwork at the entrance to our hotel as her ‘Angel’ work was very appropriate for us. We are very pleased with the mural which leads guests perfectly into the hotel.’

Admission into the ‘Moments’ exhibition at Moyses Hall Museum until September 30 is £6 for adults, £4 concessions and children aged 5-16 years and £15 for a family (2+3). Run in association with Brandler Galleries, featured artists also include Banksy, Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Kaws, Pure Evil, and Connor Brothers – with both original artworks and prints.
