Maverick Festival comes of age

Paul Spencer Maverick Festival Suffolk

Paul Spencer is the Festival Director of Maverick Festival in Suffolk, the UK’s first and finest Americana festival. Ahead of its 18th year, the former drummer explains why he has brought alternative country to Easton Farm Park

Who are you and what do you do?

I was previously a drummer, playing with bands like Magazine and Alex Harvey before a career in film and music video where I produced dozens of clips for the likes of U2, Pete Townsend and The Rolling Stones as well as the Grammy-winning short film Jazzin’ for Blue Jean with David Bowie. I moved from Los Angeles to Suffolk in 2002 to raise a family. Fortunately, I had bought a house here in the 80s when it was extremely unfashionable and cheap!

What is the background to Maverick Festival and how has it evolved as a festival over the past 18 years?

I wanted to continue my life in music and the idea of starting a festival seemed a perfect fit given my previous experience. I was lucky enough to live in Easton and had taken my children to Easton Farm Park, so it became the obvious choice for the location. Of course, I had to persuade the family who own it but despite my trepidation, they were and remain very supportive. Over the years, we have gathered a community of like-minded music lovers who faithfully buy tickets every year, even before we announce any artists which keeps the pressure on me to come up with the goods.

What is your involvement in the festival? Have you been Director since the start?

I have been in the saddle since I came up with the idea back in 2007.

Are you Suffolk born and raised? What do you love about the county?

My mother and her seven siblings were all born and raised here so it was in my genes to one day return and settle here. I particularly enjoy an authentic Suffolk pub which can still be found if you know where to look.

And what is it about Americana that you love?

I lived in the States for twelve years and got to love the music then. I was particularly inspired by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage festival, a wonderful event that celebrates roots music, especially the regional music of Louisiana. I realised on my return that Americana (or alt.country as it was known when we started) did not have a festival of its own so recognised an opportunity.

What makes Easton Farm Park such a special venue, do you think?

The restored Victorian barns and outbuildings set in rolling pastures create a unique atmosphere that can’t be found or created in the tents that most festivals use.

What can people expect this year?

A beautiful campsite with plenty of space, carefully curated food vendors and  local beers with no queues at the bar and clean toilets (!) plus our trademark high quality programme featuring the entire range of American roots music from authentic blues, Zydeco and Cajun to Bluegrass, Country, Folk with some indie rock for good measure.

How would you describe the festival to anyone who hasn’t been before (but who are thinking about going)?

All the thrills of a great family-friendly music festival, without the crowds or the huge expense.

What are your hopes and dreams for the festival? Another 18 years?

I am 70 this year but my daughter Ella is a rising star in the Americana world and loves the event so if our generous hosts at Easton Farm Park will have us, I am sure it will carry on one way or another.

Maverick Festival takes place at Easton Farm Park, Suffolk, IP13 0PQ, from Friday 4th July to Sunday 6th, showcasing international artists from both sides of the Atlantic and beyond. Visit maverickfestival.co.uk.
