It’s in the trees

February 19, 2024 Leave a Comment

Jimmy’s Farm founder Jimmy Doherty has been busy planting trees at the Wildlife Park, thanks to a donation from Cherry Lane Garden Centres. And it will make a big difference to Ewa the rescue polar bear

Ewa the polar bear, based at Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park near Ipswich, can enjoy a new sensory experience thanks to a donation of trees thanks to Cherry Lane Garden Centres . The donation took place with the planting of the trees by founder Jimmy Doherty in the park’s Polar Bear Reserve. The 19 trees donated by Cherry Lane, part of the East Anglian based QD Group, included nine Acers and a Christmas tree – and were planted to enhance the reserve for inhabitant Ewa and provide sensory stimulation. Ewa was rescued from a zoo closing in Sweden and lives in an area called The Lost Lands of the Tundra that has open pastures, beautiful woodland, deep ponds and lakes. It is the largest polar bear reserve in Europe, which opened on-site last year.

Jimmy Doherty, owner of Jimmy’s Farm, says: ‘We have always held a vision of promoting a wider understanding of the natural world and inspiring future generations to support and protect our planet, and never has there been more need to do so. We are delighted to accept this donation from Cherry Lane and QD – a local, family run business, and look forward to working with them to create fun, easy to do activities that everyone can get involved with on the farm and at home to do their bit to help make a difference.’

Nisha Collins, brand and marketing manager for QD Group, adds: ‘We’re excited to donate these trees to Jimmy’s Farm from Cherry Lane and within the wider QD Group. As part of our commitment to being a responsible retailer, our Value Our Planet mission aims to encourage customers to make more eco-friendly choices, as well as looking at ways that we can do more as a business. We are hoping to highlight the valuable work of Space for the Wild and get our stores and customers engaged and working together to help protect our planet.’

The donation will see them working together on a range of green initiatives which align the QD Group’s Value Our Planet mission and the Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park’s charity – Space for the Wild. More details will be announced in the coming months.

Established in 1985, the QD Group includes Cherry Lane Garden Centres, QD – QualityDiscounts.com stores and Lathams of Potter Heigham. QD launched Value Our Planet in 2021 and as part of this mission has already made significant savings across the business such as cutting energy use and packaging and increasing recycling and sustainable product ranges. Some of its customer-facing initiatives include operating in-store nurseries to produce the ‘Grown by Us’ range of plants sold throughout its garden centres, recycling points for compost bags and plant pots, and championing green gardening practices such as rainwater harvesting, bee-friendly planting and peat free compost.
