How to stay positive through grief

August 31, 2023 Leave a Comment

The last few years have been tough for many of us who have lost someone we love. Based on his own experience, Robert Bradley, Centre Manager for Castle Quarter Norwich, shares some tips on how to stay positive through grief

Grief is a natural and normal response to loss, but it can also feel overwhelming and lonely at times. I want to share some tips on how to stay positive through grief, based on my own experience and what has helped me cope.

First, acknowledge your feelings and don’t judge yourself for having them. Grief is not a sign of weakness or failure, it’s a sign of love and attachment. It’s okay to feel sad, angry, guilty, or any other emotion that comes up. Don’t bottle them up or try to avoid them, because they will only get worse. Instead, express them in healthy ways, such as talking to someone you trust, writing in a journal, or doing something creative.

Second, take care of yourself physically and mentally. Grief can take a toll on your body and mind, so it’s important to eat well, get enough sleep, exercise regularly, and avoid alcohol and drugs. These things will help you feel more energized and resilient. Also, seek professional help if you feel depressed, anxious, or suicidal. There is no shame in asking for support when you need it.

Third, find meaning and purpose in your life. Grief can make you question your beliefs and values, and make you feel like nothing matters anymore. But you can use this as an opportunity to reevaluate your priorities and goals, and to discover new passions and interests. You can also honour your loved one by doing something that reflects their legacy, such as volunteering for a cause they cared about, donating to a charity they supported, or creating a memorial for them.

Finally, remember that you are not alone. Grief can make you feel isolated and misunderstood, but there are many people who care about you and want to help you. Reach out to your family and friends, join a support group, or connect with others who have gone through a similar loss. You can also find comfort in your faith, spirituality, or philosophy. Remember that your loved one is always with you in your heart and memory.

I hope these tips can help you stay positive through grief. Remember that grief is a journey, not a destination. It will take time and patience, but you will heal and grow from it. You are stronger than you think.
