Norwich Unity Hub is on the lookout for more volunteers to help nurture the network of gardens at Carrow House back to life

Norwich Unity Hub, the community of organisations based at Carrow House, is on the lookout for volunteers to nurture the historic back to life this year – starting this Sunday! Gardener Boyd explains more

From planting and wildlife care to helping with a woodland walk, amphitheatre space, and rooftop community garden, Norwich Unity Hub based at Carrow House is on the lookout for volunteers to help bring the gardens back to life. Norwich Unity Hub is a community-focused organisation breathing new life into under-used buildings across the city. Based at Carrow House, a historic site in the heart of Norwich, the Hub brings together charities, social enterprises, artists and community groups, offering affordable workspace, shared resources and a strong sense of collaboration. Alongside the buildings themselves, Norwich Unity Hub is committed to caring for the surrounding outdoor spaces, ensuring they are welcoming, sustainable and accessible to the wider community.

Hidden behind the historic buildings, a network of gardens is beginning to re-emerge… and this is very much a work in progress. Since Norwich Unity Hub became custodians in October 2024, Boyd from Boyd’s Garden & Wildlife Services, supported by a small but committed group of volunteers, has been carefully nurturing the space back to life. With new planting underway, composting areas established, wildlife encouraged and early restoration work on the sunken rose garden, the grounds are starting to show what they could become.

There is still so much more to do. Alongside The Glade, an outdoor educational area, plans are in place to develop the woodland walk, bring an amphitheatre space back into use, and create a rooftop community garden later this year. These projects offer exciting opportunities for people who want to get involved at ground level – whether that’s helping with planting and maintenance, supporting wildlife, or simply being part of shaping a shared green space in the heart of the city.

Boyd explains: “We’re really at the beginning of the journey here. The potential of the Carrow House gardens is huge, but it will only be realised with people’s help. Even small amounts of time make a difference, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see the space change week by week. We’d love more volunteers to join us and help shape what this place becomes.”

Want to get involved? Whether you have a green thumb or just a little time to spare, the team would love your help bringing the Carrow House gardens to life. From planting and wildlife care to helping with our woodland walk, amphitheatre space, and rooftop community garden, every hand makes a difference.

The 2026 gardening dates are: Sunday January 25; Sunday February 22 and Sunday March 29. All 10am to 2pm. Email: hello@norwichunityhub.org  and the team will share a link to the Garden Volunteer WhatsApp group for further information and how you can be involved. Alternatively, follow Norwich Unity Hub on Instagram and send a DM.
