Kala Cole makes all manner of things reusable. On Earth Day, she talks of why she has left her job as an Openreach engineer to concentrate on growing her Little Home-eco business and raising her two daughters
My life so far has been good. I have a very large and close family. I had a few ups and down as a teenager, but I guess that is normal! All-in-all it has been a nice life so far.
Life at the start of 2020 looked fairly normal. Little home-eco had just begun and we had high hopes for a few family camping trips and festivals…little did we know, hey?!
Little Home-eco came about when I got a second-hand sewing machine just after Christmas 2019 and decided to make a sandwich wrap from some old material and a bread bag! I quickly realised that with proper materials this would make a good business idea and really help make a difference to the amount of single use plastic used by people.
I now make reusable sandwich and snack bags; two sizes of sandwich wraps; reusable face and baby wipes; no sponge sponges – one with soft terry towel for the bath and one with heavy cotton and hessian for washing up.
I also make reusable organic eye pillows and small cold compresses that are perfect when little ones get bumps and bruises (which mine do daily!).
The lockdowns haven’t affected us as badly as they have a lot of people. My husband got furloughed, to look after the girls in the first lockdown as I was a key worker and then we always had childcare after that due to me being a key worker. We have obviously missed seeing people and going places, but we definitely haven’t struggled, like some, and for that I’m grateful.
Plans for the rest of this year are basically celebrating the girls’ birthdays with family and, as I’ve just left my job as a BT Openreach engineer, I’m looking forward to being a mum!
I’m super pleased with how far my business has come in the weirdest year in my lifetime and I’m looking to supply a few more shops. I’m working on a making reusable gift bags and will, dare I say it, soon be cracking on with reusable Christmas gift bags, reusable cloth Christmas crackers and I’m hoping to make reusable advent calendars, too.
My message for Earth Day? People should use today to make the swap they have been meaning to do. Just one swap can make a big difference.
