For this month’s column, Gemma Crane, Founder and Director of Mindset-HR, offers a very personal perspective on why the past doesn’t have to define us
If someone had told me years ago that I’d one day be writing an article like this – as the founder of a thriving HR consultancy – I would have laughed it off. But life has a funny way of steering us in directions we never expect, especially when we decide to take control of our story instead of letting it control us.
Growing up, like many people, I absorbed countless beliefs, habits, and expectations without ever realising it. Some were positive, shaping my values and drive, while others were unhelpful, limiting my sense of self-worth and potential. It’s important to know that our subconscious doesn’t filter information; it just absorbs. The thoughts, words and beliefs we encounter in our formative years sink into our minds, setting patterns that we often carry into adulthood. But those patterns don’t have to define us.
I’ll be open here: my journey involved grappling with self-doubt and the lasting impact of past trauma. I had experienced mental abuse, which affected my self-esteem, my confidence and, ultimately, how I saw myself and my capabilities. It would have been so easy to let that story rule my future, to fall into a victim mentality and accept that as my “normal”. But doing so would have prevented me from taking the steps that led to where I am today.
Looking back, I realise that deciding to reject the old narrative was a turning point. By refusing to let that pain be my identity, I transformed what could have been a hindrance into a source of strength.
That was when I discovered that your “mess” can become your message. The experiences you survive and grow from can offer insights and resilience that might help someone else along the way.
I didn’t start Mindset-HR just to build a business; I started it to support people, to promote community, and to spread the message that no past story has to dictate the rest of your life.
Letting go of that past identity was one of the hardest but most rewarding decisions I ever made. At first, changing habits and mindsets feels impossible – it goes against everything familiar. But I knew that if I wanted to build something meaningful, I had to shift my perspective. I had to start rejecting the old beliefs that were holding me back. When we identify where these limiting beliefs come from, we take back the power to rewrite our story.
For anyone else navigating similar struggles, know this: your past does not define you unless you allow it to. It’s easy to feel trapped by familiar patterns, and change isn’t always a smooth journey.
But I promise, there’s strength in confronting the thoughts and habits that hold you back. Our purpose often lies in our deepest pain. So, when we find the courage to face our past, to rewrite our story, and to turn our mess into our message, we create the freedom to build a future we genuinely want.
So, I encourage you to ask yourself – what habits and beliefs are you carrying that no longer serve you? Which pieces of your story are you ready to let go of? As you answer these questions, remember that growth begins from the inside out, and you are the author of your next chapter.
At Mindset-HR, we understand how challenging it can be to break free from old patterns and embrace a new path. Our team is here to support you, whether you’re ready to work through limiting beliefs, transform your work environment, or build a thriving culture within your organisation. Together, we’ll create a future that reflects the best version of you and your team.
