Terra String Quartet – The Battery, Lowestoft

First Light Festival and Britten Pears Arts are delighted to welcome the Terra String Quartet,
visiting from New York City, for a special evening performance at The Battery, Lowestoft.

Based in New York and formed at the world-renowned Juilliard School, the Terra String Quartet
is one of the most exciting young chamber ensembles on the international stage. Their
appearance at The Battery brings a rare opportunity for local audiences to hear musicians of
international calibre in the intimate and usual setting of a former Tesco supermarket.

The programme has been specially curated for the Lowestoft performance and includes works
by Haydn, Borodin, Prokofiev, Mendelssohn and Benjamin Britten—whose deep connection to
Suffolk and birthplace in nearby Lowestoft makes this an especially resonant programme.

Hearing Britten’s music performed by a New York–based quartet highlights the connection
between Lowestoft’s musical heritage and today’s international classical scene.

Fresh from major successes at the 2025 Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition and
the Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition, the Terra String Quartet has been
praised for its sincerity, artistic excellence and dynamic approach to repertoire. The ensemble’s
four members represent four continents and six languages; a diversity reflected in both their
name—Terra, meaning earth—and their expansive musical perspective.

The concert at The Battery forms part of the Britten Pears Young Artist Programme’s Chamber
Music in Residence series but stands alone as a flagship performance for Lowestoft audiences,
placing The Battery at the centre of an international musical exchange.
