The indie ceramics movement comes to Norwich

September 24, 2025 Leave a Comment

Nicole Flack, organiser of the first Norwich Ceramics Market

Nicole Flack, Founder of Cretaceous Creations handmade fossil stoneware pottery, is organising the first Norwich Ceramics Market, which will take place at The Forum in December. Here, Nicole explains how the market could change perceptions about ceramics

Who are you and what do you do?

I’m Nicole Flack, a ceramic Artist and Founder of Cretaceous Creations. I make playful, indie, fossil-inspired pottery — from functional mugs and plates to my cult Pliosaur carved mugs. Alongside making, I’m organising the first ever Norwich Ceramics Market.

What is your background in ceramics? What do you love about what you do?

I actually started ceramics fairly recently, in 2022, as a way of dealing with work stress. I took a class at The Clay Studio in Ashdown Forest, and I was hooked from the very first session. The teachers were so kind and patient and working with clay really grounded me.

Over time, I started carving dinosaurs into my pieces — a throwback to my childhood obsession with palaeontology! To my surprise, people began asking to buy them, and that’s how Cretaceous Creations was born. Since then, I’ve become a regular at ceramics markets and at the Lyme Regis Fossil Festival, where I’ve built a loyal following of paleoart enthusiasts.

What I love most about ceramics is that balance between function and imagination — making something someone can drink their morning coffee from but also giving it a playful twist that makes it special.

What has brought you to Norwich? Do you think Norwich is a particularly creative city?

I was born in London, but my family moved to Norfolk when I was young, so this is where I grew up. I’ve also experienced the amazing indie ceramics scene in London, and I wanted to bring some of that energy here to Norfolk while also celebrating local artists. I knew there was space for that, and Norwich feels like the perfect home. It’s a city that thrives on creativity — from music and zines to design and craft — and I think ceramics fits naturally into that mix.

What has led you to organising the first ever Norwich Ceramics Market and how would you describe it?

There’s a strong national indie ceramics movement, and I wanted to showcase that energy here in Norwich. I also wanted to shake off the perception of ceramics as stuffy or overly serious. The market is about celebrating the Homegrown Pottery Society — an ethos and community of makers who are bold, playful, and totally original. Expect functional pottery like mugs, plates, and bowls, alongside ceramics featuring dinosaurs, animals, and mythical creatures.

When and where is it happening and what can people expect on the day? How many makers are booked in?

The market takes place on Sunday 7th December 2025 at The Forum, Norwich. There’ll be over 50 makers from across the UK selling their work, so you can expect everything from everyday kitchenware to collectable statement pieces. It’s free to enter, and with Christmas just around the corner, it’s the perfect place to pick up one-of-a-kind gifts while supporting independent artists.

Will it be the first of many, do you think?

Definitely. The response from makers has been overwhelming, and it’s clear there’s a huge appetite for indie ceramics in Norwich. This is just the beginning.
