Clare Palmier is the Director of the Art Station in Saxmundham, Suffolk, which is running a Silent Auction this month, to support both artists and its free art and learning programme. Here, Clare explains more
Who are you and what do you do?
I’m Director of the Art Station. I’m an artist and believe in the value of creativity for everyone.
What is the story behind The Art Station and how would you describe the creative space?
The Art Station is an arts charity based in Saxmundham, offering a high quality and innovative Art and Learning programme for all ages and supporting young people into the creative industries. Our programme offers exhibitions, talks, tours, walks, events, and hands- on creative sessions as well as co-working and creative workspaces for local people.
What is your background?
I’m an artist and have worked in regeneration for over 25 years – using creativity to bring about positive changes in different communities.
Are you Suffolk born and raised?
My mum grew up in Diss, and my extended family were in Essex and Suffolk. I moved to Suffolk with my family in 2007.
What is happening this month and what is the aim?
We’re offering some beautiful artworks in an online Silent Auction until 7 pm on 17th December, to raise funds for our free programme.
How important is it to you to provide free arts and learning programmes for the community?
It’s essential to offer everyone the opportunity to access arts and culture locally. Many people can’t afford to pay for tickets or paid sessions for themselves or their families. Culture and creativity enrich people’s lives in many ways and should be on offer to everyone. Taking part improves mental and physical wellbeing for all ages.

What would you like to say about the artists involved this year?
We have some brilliant artists who have offered works for the auction – we’ve worked with them in our programme. They have Suffolk connections and some also work nationally and internationally. For example, this year we have an artwork donated by the celebrated international contemporary artist Ryan Gander.

How can people get involved?
Go to: theartstation.uk/exhibition/silent-auction. Have a look at the beautiful art works and bid online.
Is the silent auction becoming a firm fixture on the calendar?
Help us to make it a success so we can do it again next year!
The Art Station’s Silent Auction closes on December 17, 2025 at 7pm. Pick-up location: 24 High Street, Saxmundham, Suffolk, IP17 1AE.
