Personal trainer Rhi Tims, is about to open OtherFolk Studio, an LGBTQIA+ safe space in Norwich. Here, Rhi shares the story behind the studio
Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Rhi. I’m a personal trainer based in Norwich. For the last four years I’ve been working out of Complete Fitness – helping clients build their confidence in the gym whilst getting stronger.
You were last featured in 2022 – what has happened since then, professionally and personally?
In the last four years I’ve built an amazing community both in and outside the gym – including starting up Gay to 5k, which is a Norwich based run group, built with the aim of creating a safe space for members of the LGBTQIA+ community. You can run, walk, and connect with likeminded people. In my personal training the RRT Angels (aka my clients) has grown exponentially, and I’ve had the pleasure of working with so many amazing individuals from all walks of life. It’s been so rewarding watching so many of them go from never having stepped foot in a gym before, to becoming fully fledged gym goers and falling in love with strength training. In my personal life my son is now four! I got married to my amazing wife in 2024, and we’re in the process of growing our family which is super exciting.
What has led you to opening your own gym?
Having my own space has always been something that I’ve wanted to do. After PT-ing for six years and building my community, I thought now was the best time to take the leap. Through working with so many people of the LGBTQIA+ community, and through my own personal experiences of the fitness industry, I realised there was a need for a safe, inclusive space for those of us who feel like they just don’t fit in with the traditional idea of health and fitness.
What will you be able to offer when OtherFolk Studio opens? Who is it aimed at in particular?
When OtherFolk Studio opens, we will be offering small intimate classes throughout the week, one-to-one sessions with our wonderful and talented personal trainers, and there will be opportunities for other fitness and wellness providers to hire the space for their own classes. OtherFolk is for anyone who feels like fitness in the traditional sense doesn’t align with who they are but still wants a safe space to move their body.
When is opening day and where is the studio located?
Our opening day is Saturday 1st August between 1pm-4pm and we are based at Aylsham Road business park (Unit 1).
What are your hopes and dreams for the OtherFolk space?
My dream is to create a community and space free of judgement, diet culture, BS and toxic fitness standards. Where people can come, have a laugh, move their bodies and are free to be who they are.
OtherFolk Studio opens at Unit 1, Aylsham Road Business Park, Norwich, on Saturday August 1, 2026 (1-3pm). Follow on Instagram.
