SUMMARY:The Finn Collinson Band gig - Wells Maltings - Wells-Next-the Sea
DESCRIPTION:Expect “initial touches of baroque fusing with modern day folk” (FATEA) as The Finn Collinson Band returns to the stage in 2025. Comprising three of English folk’s leading virtuosos of their respective instruments\, they will introduce new material\, along with favourites from critically-acclaimed studio albums The Threshold (2022) and Call To Mind (2019). \nAlthough fundamentally folk in approach\, Finn often draws on elements of early music to sculpt his distinctive sound. Traditional dance tunes meet melodies by the likes of Purcell and Van Eyck\, shaken up in striking new arrangements and brought up to date with Finn’s own compositions and trademark recorder style. As RNR observes\, Finn “has both the chops and the vision to take his music in many directions”. \nJoined by two of the genre’s most in-demand musicians\, Evan Carson (bodhran\, percussion) and Archie Churchill-Moss (accordion\, guitar)\, Finn and his band produce a powerful and pioneering sound. With a respectful eye on the past\, but a firm grounding in the present\, Finn’s music transcends and defies expectations of both folk and early music\, creating a captivating and wonderfully varied live show. \nFinn is honoured to be part of a growing generation of creative young players on the English folk scene\, and is humbly considered one of the genre’s foremost innovators on his chosen instrument of the recorder. Formerly shortlisted for the BBC Radio 2 Young\nFolk Award\, Finn also performs with the busy ceilidh band Stroma and is in high demand as a session musician\, composer and workshop leader. \nStart time: 7.30pm \nRunning time: 2 hours 30 minutes

SUMMARY:Seeds of Hate and Hope exhibition - Sainsbury Centre\, Norwich
DESCRIPTION:Seeds of Hate and Hope presents personal artistic responses to global mass atrocities\, such as genocides\, ethnic cleansing\, war crimes and crimes against humanity. Featuring work by artists including Mona Hatoum\, William Kentridge\, Hew Locke\, Zoran Mušič\, Peter Oloya\, Kimberly Fulton Orozco and Indrė Šerpytytė\, it explores how\, throughout the 20th and 21st centuries\, artists have witnessed\, experienced and responded to atrocity crimes and conflicts with powerful and compelling artworks. Drawing courage and inspiration from personal experience as well as shared histories\, they have reacted to these events for many reasons including but not limited to bearing witness\, expressing grief and promoting healing. \nWith the aim of raising awareness about global conflicts and the role of art in confronting their legacy\, this exhibition highlights artistic responses to such devastating events with creativity and courage. It features artworks which are reflections of\, rather than images of\, violence or victims; and which challenge the typical depictions of war and conflict often shown in the media. \nSignificant works on display include William Kentridge’s Ubu Tells the Truth (1997)\, which confronts the violence and injustice of apartheid in South Africa; Gideon Rubin’s Black Book (2017) which redacts every page of Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf\, symbolically stripping the text and imagery of its intent; Ishiuchi Miyako’s photographs of everyday objects which belonged to victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki; Mona Hatoum’s iconic Hot Spot (2006)\, a reference to a world which Hatoum describes as “continually caught up in conflict and unrest”; and a series of bronze sculptures by Peter Oloya\, whose experiences of violence and displacement during conflict in northern Uganda informed his love of modelling shapes and figures first in clay\, and later in bronze and wood. \nThrough its diverse body of work\, Seeds of Hate and Hope explores how both individual and collective acts of resistance and resilience often take root in times of conflict. The exhibition emphasises the vital role that human empathy and respect play in safeguarding society against the destructive forces of prejudice\, hate speech\, discrimination and dehumanisation.\nEach artwork becomes a catalyst for healing – promoting tolerance and understanding across cultures\, religions and identities. \nCan We Stop Killing Each Other? is the latest in an innovative series of investigative exhibition seasons by the Sainsbury Centre following its radical relaunch in 2023 to formally recognise the lifeforce of art\, enabling people to build relationships with living art across its dynamic museum landscape. \nSeeds of Hate and Hope joins four other exhibitions which explore Can We Stop Killing Each\nOther?. These are Tiaki Ora ∞ Protecting Life: Anton Forde; Eyewitness; Roots of Resilience: Tesfaye Urgessa; and The National Gallery Masterpiece Tour: Reflections on Peace. It is curated by Tafadzwa Makwabarara\, Curator of Cultural Empowerment at the Sainsbury Centre and Jelena Sofronijevic\, an independent curator\, writer\, and the producer of the EMPIRE LINES podcast\, which addresses the unexpected\, and often two-way\, flow of empires through art. \nExhibition research was supported by the Jonathan Ruffer grant from the Art Fund.

He first came to public attention in 1981 for his performance in Julian Mitchell’s critically acclaimed play and subsequent film Another Country which garnered him his first BAFTA nomination. From there he has enjoyed a successful career\, starring in My Best Friend’s Wedding\, An Ideal Husband\, A Royal Night Out and voicing Prince Charming in the popular Shrek franchise. He made his directional debut with The Happy Prince\, which he wrote and stars in as Oscar Wilde. \nHe has also excelled in theatre with many notable performances The Vortex and in recent years The Judas Kiss\, Pygmalion and Amadeus. Last year he returned to The Royal Theatre of Bath with one of Chekhov’s great theatrical masterpieces Uncle Vanya\, which he directed and starred in. \nAbout The American No: \nEight stories of love and loss\, drama and glamour\, hope and rejection\, from a writer at the height of his powers. \nIn Rupert Everett’s first\, glorious collection of stories\, he takes us on an exhilarating journey with a cast of extraordinary characters. A blackly humorous story of a chaotic and emotional funeral in Paris. Oscar Wilde’s last night in Paris\, vividly evocative\, unflinching and elegiac. A middle-aged American-Russian countess who confronts sex and age in a Wiltshire teashop. The ferociously unforgiving life of an L.A. talent agency and the unexpected twist that launches a completely different kind of career. The deathbed confession of a woman who left home for 1850s India\, never to return. A story of emigration\, love and grief. And a beautifully evocative\, touching and witty portrayal of Proust’s creative life and his childhood. \nThis event is in partnership with Norfolk Screen\, for which Everett is a patron. \nThe event will be followed by a book signing with The Book Hive.

SUMMARY:Pre-loved school uniform pop-up - Castle Quarter\, Norwich
DESCRIPTION:Parents and carers looking to replenish their children’s school uniforms for the spring term are invited to Castle Quarter’s next pre-loved pop-up event\, taking place on Monday 5th January. \nNow entering its third year\, the Norwich social\, leisure and lifestyle destination runs a community initiative which welcomes donations of good-quality used uniform items\, that are then offered\, for free\, at pop-up events to anyone needing support in pulling together or refreshing their child’s school clothing. \nThe project has proved so popular that Castle Quarter has been hosting pop-up events throughout the past year. \nOn 5th January\, parents and carers will be able to visit the Centre Management Office\, on Level 3\, between 9am and 4pm\, and pick up one set of pre-loved school uniform per child at no cost. All are welcome to just turn up\, with no pre-booking required. \nSince Castle Quarter launched the scheme in 2024\, more than 2\,500 items\, including branded blazers\, shirts\, jumpers\, skirts\, PE kit and shoes\, have been distributed to over 200 families. It is estimated that this has saved families almost £15\,000.\nAs well as helping to ease the financial burden of school uniform shopping\, the initiative has also diverted more than 900kg of textiles from landfill – that’s the weight equivalent of nine baby elephants! \nAccording to the Department of Education\, a uniform for a child in primary school can cost\, on average\, £343\, which rises to £442 for a child in secondary school. Some uniforms require a high number of branded items\, which can only be purchased in specialist shops and can drive up the overall price. \nTo donate pre-loved school uniform at Castle Quarter\, please drop off bags at the Centre Management Office\, on Level 3\, between 9am and 4pm\, on any day. Items must be washed and in good\, wearable condition\, with all name tags removed where possible. \nCheck Castle Quarter’s website and Facebook page for the latest events and announcements. \nPre-loved school uniform items at Castle Quarter
