SUMMARY:Ian Collins: Blythe Spirit - launch - Book Hive\, Norwich
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the paperback publication of Ian Collins’ extraordinary biography of writer and essayist Ronald Blythe. \nRonald Blythe (1922-2023)\, author of the inimitable Akenfield\, was a prolific and poetic chronicler of rural and spiritual life\, nature and literature. He spent a joyful century close to his Suffolk roots\, time travelling in his imagination and publishing forty books and thousands of essays. His wide creative network included John and Christine Nash\, Cedric Morris\, Benjamin Britten\, E.M. Forster\, Patricia Highsmith and Richard Mabey. From finding Thomas Hardy in February rain and John Clare in country tracks\, to talking to his white cat and reading through a dragonfly’s wings\, the Blythe gift was to marvel in the everyday. \nHis writing was intimate\, meditative and often laced with a wry humour\, inviting readers to share his enchanting perspective on the world. Yet few knew the ‘real’ Ronald Blythe. Leaving school at 14\, he educated himself in libraries\, churches and walks in the East Anglian landscape. He never spoke about early poverty and traumatic experience in the war\, while his sexuality was kept private except from those closest to him. \nDrawing on unparalleled access to letters\, notebooks\, published works\, drafts\, and conversations from decades of friendship\, Blythe Spirit tells the full story of Ronald for the first time. The result is a sensitive\, revelatory portrait which celebrates a fascinating\, complex man and casts new light on one of our greatest writers. \nIan will be in conversation with author and Guardian journalist (and friend of the shop!) Patrick Barkham. After their chat\, there’ll be time for an audience Q&A and book signing. \nIan Collins: Blythe Spirit\nThursday 13th November 2025\nThe Book Hive\, Norwich\nDoors 6:30pm for a 7:00pm start\nFREE (but a suggested donation of £2 to help cover wine and heating is most welcome)

Follow Shadow’s journey of mishaps and adventures through the Rotunda and in the Stumpery in the Italianate Garden\, discover his encounters and friendships with the local wildlife in this heart-warming snowy winter’s tale he’ll never forget. \n  \nThe story of Shadow the snow leopard and his festive escapades was written by Beth Davidson who has worked at Ickworth for two years as part of the visitor welcome team. Visitors had often asked Beth about the cat-like creature on the Hervey (the family that owned and built Ickworth) family crest and after a lot of curiosity and a bit of digging\, Beth soon discovered that the mysterious creature is an ‘Ounce’\, more commonly known as a snow leopard\, and represents strength and courage. \n“A snow leopard at Ickworth?! How strange! How magical!” said Beth. “I could feel a story spinning and a curious creature coming to life. We thought it was about time to give our snow leopard his very own tale (or tail!) this Christmas.” \nFestive shopping and eating \n  \nThere’s plenty of Christmas shopping to be done with a visit to our shop where you’ll find loads of gift ideas from young to old\, covering a whole host of interests. Find that perfect gift or pick up a festive treat for yourself. \nAnd a Christmas visit isn’t complete with a festive bite to round off your day. Tuck into some tasty treats with our seasonal flavoured drinks from gingerbread lattes to luxury hot chocolates. As well as pasties and sausage rolls\, rounding everything off with some yummy yuletide bakes. \nWinter Walks \nWith 1800 acres of parkland to explore\, there are plenty of winter walks to enjoy at Ickworth. Whether it’s just for a dog walk\, or a longer post-Christmas family walk\, there are miles of paths to take you to all corners of the estate and to places you may never have seen before. \n Ickworth Estate is open daily from 9am until 5pm (closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day)\, normal admission charges apply\, free for National Trust Members. \n To find out more about Christmas at Ickworth Estate\, visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ickworth or search Ickworth Estate on Facebook and Instagram.

SUMMARY:The Finn Collinson Band gig - Wells Maltings - Wells-Next-the Sea
DESCRIPTION:Expect “initial touches of baroque fusing with modern day folk” (FATEA) as The Finn Collinson Band returns to the stage in 2025. Comprising three of English folk’s leading virtuosos of their respective instruments\, they will introduce new material\, along with favourites from critically-acclaimed studio albums The Threshold (2022) and Call To Mind (2019). \nAlthough fundamentally folk in approach\, Finn often draws on elements of early music to sculpt his distinctive sound. Traditional dance tunes meet melodies by the likes of Purcell and Van Eyck\, shaken up in striking new arrangements and brought up to date with Finn’s own compositions and trademark recorder style. As RNR observes\, Finn “has both the chops and the vision to take his music in many directions”. \nJoined by two of the genre’s most in-demand musicians\, Evan Carson (bodhran\, percussion) and Archie Churchill-Moss (accordion\, guitar)\, Finn and his band produce a powerful and pioneering sound. With a respectful eye on the past\, but a firm grounding in the present\, Finn’s music transcends and defies expectations of both folk and early music\, creating a captivating and wonderfully varied live show. \nFinn is honoured to be part of a growing generation of creative young players on the English folk scene\, and is humbly considered one of the genre’s foremost innovators on his chosen instrument of the recorder. Formerly shortlisted for the BBC Radio 2 Young\nFolk Award\, Finn also performs with the busy ceilidh band Stroma and is in high demand as a session musician\, composer and workshop leader. \nStart time: 7.30pm \nRunning time: 2 hours 30 minutes

SUMMARY:Seeds of Hate and Hope exhibition - Sainsbury Centre\, Norwich
DESCRIPTION:Seeds of Hate and Hope presents personal artistic responses to global mass atrocities\, such as genocides\, ethnic cleansing\, war crimes and crimes against humanity. Featuring work by artists including Mona Hatoum\, William Kentridge\, Hew Locke\, Zoran Mušič\, Peter Oloya\, Kimberly Fulton Orozco and Indrė Šerpytytė\, it explores how\, throughout the 20th and 21st centuries\, artists have witnessed\, experienced and responded to atrocity crimes and conflicts with powerful and compelling artworks. Drawing courage and inspiration from personal experience as well as shared histories\, they have reacted to these events for many reasons including but not limited to bearing witness\, expressing grief and promoting healing. \nWith the aim of raising awareness about global conflicts and the role of art in confronting their legacy\, this exhibition highlights artistic responses to such devastating events with creativity and courage. It features artworks which are reflections of\, rather than images of\, violence or victims; and which challenge the typical depictions of war and conflict often shown in the media. \nSignificant works on display include William Kentridge’s Ubu Tells the Truth (1997)\, which confronts the violence and injustice of apartheid in South Africa; Gideon Rubin’s Black Book (2017) which redacts every page of Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf\, symbolically stripping the text and imagery of its intent; Ishiuchi Miyako’s photographs of everyday objects which belonged to victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki; Mona Hatoum’s iconic Hot Spot (2006)\, a reference to a world which Hatoum describes as “continually caught up in conflict and unrest”; and a series of bronze sculptures by Peter Oloya\, whose experiences of violence and displacement during conflict in northern Uganda informed his love of modelling shapes and figures first in clay\, and later in bronze and wood. \nThrough its diverse body of work\, Seeds of Hate and Hope explores how both individual and collective acts of resistance and resilience often take root in times of conflict. The exhibition emphasises the vital role that human empathy and respect play in safeguarding society against the destructive forces of prejudice\, hate speech\, discrimination and dehumanisation.\nEach artwork becomes a catalyst for healing – promoting tolerance and understanding across cultures\, religions and identities. \nCan We Stop Killing Each Other? is the latest in an innovative series of investigative exhibition seasons by the Sainsbury Centre following its radical relaunch in 2023 to formally recognise the lifeforce of art\, enabling people to build relationships with living art across its dynamic museum landscape. \nSeeds of Hate and Hope joins four other exhibitions which explore Can We Stop Killing Each\nOther?. These are Tiaki Ora ∞ Protecting Life: Anton Forde; Eyewitness; Roots of Resilience: Tesfaye Urgessa; and The National Gallery Masterpiece Tour: Reflections on Peace. It is curated by Tafadzwa Makwabarara\, Curator of Cultural Empowerment at the Sainsbury Centre and Jelena Sofronijevic\, an independent curator\, writer\, and the producer of the EMPIRE LINES podcast\, which addresses the unexpected\, and often two-way\, flow of empires through art. \nExhibition research was supported by the Jonathan Ruffer grant from the Art Fund.
