Why is cold water good for us?
A dip in cold water can make you feel great and bring numerous reported benefits:
* An instant lift in mood – chest-deep immersion in cold water triggers a release of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, cortisol, dopamine, norepinephrine and B-endorphin, which create feelings of wellbeing.
* Positive emotions afterwards – studies show that after immersion in water below 20 degrees Celsius, people reported feeling more active, alert and proud of themselves, and less distressed and nervous.
* Improved long-term mental health – some people who took daily cold showers for months reported decreased symptoms of depression.
* Immunity – it is thought that the shock of cold water can stimulate leukocytes, the blood cells that fight off infection.
* Circulation – cold water sends your body into ‘survival mode’ where it has to work hard to maintain its core temperature. This prompts an increase in blood flow circulation around the body, which delivers freshly oxygenated blood to areas that need to recover.
* Improved physical health – studies suggest cold-water swimming can help you lose weight and protect against diabetes.

What will you do with the money I raise?
All money raised will go towards helping Norfolk and Waveney Mind deliver essential services to ensure no one in our region has to face poor mental health alone.
What about safety?
We take the safety of participants in this challenge very seriously. Cold-water immersion is not suitable for everyone, owing to potential risks if you have certain health conditions. This challenge is entirely at your own risk, so please assess your ability and safety before you participate. We do not recommend anyone under the age of 18 participates in the challenge unless supervised by an adult.
If people have an underlying medical condition including, but not limited to, any heart condition, low/ high/erratic blood pressure, any respiratory condition or if they are pregnant, they should seek medical advice before registering for this challenge.
